How to swap your car safely, step by step
A calm, practical walk-through of a car swap from first message to handing over the keys, with the checks that protect both sides.

Why swaps need a little extra care
Swapping a car is closer to a private sale than a shop trade. There is no dealer behind either car, no cooling-off period, and both sides take on the other person's car as it stands. That is fine when you check the right things in the right order. Most problems come from rushing or skipping a step.
Step 1: Agree on the basics in writing
Before you meet, settle the details in messages so there is a record of what was said:
- Exactly which two cars are being swapped, with year, model, variant and kilometres.
- Whether any cash is changing hands and who pays whom.
- Any faults each side already knows about.
- Where and when you will meet.
Step 2: Ask for proof before you travel
Ask for the same things you would want from any seller:
- Clear, recent photos of the whole car, including the odometer, interior and engine bay.
- The VIN, so you can run a history check (see our guide on finance checks).
- A photo of the registration papers showing the owner's name matches the person you are dealing with.
- Service records, if they say the car has them.
Step 3: Meet somewhere safe
Meet in daylight, in a public place with other people around, such as a shopping centre car park or a police station forecourt. Tell someone where you are going and who you are meeting. Bring a friend if you can, ideally one who knows cars.
Step 4: Inspect and test drive properly
Take your time. Check:
- Body, panel gaps and paint for signs of past accident repair.
- Tyres, brakes and any warning lights on the dash.
- Fluids, leaks and unusual noises on a cold start.
- How it drives: steering pull, gearbox behaviour, clutch feel, suspension noises.
- Whether the VIN on the car matches the paperwork.
Step 5: Do the paperwork together
Do not hand over keys until the paperwork is sorted. Each of you is both a buyer and a seller, so each of you transfers ownership of one car and takes over another. Our paperwork guide explains what to complete and why you should do it the same day.
Step 6: Keep a record
Take a photo of each person's licence details only if both of you agree, keep a copy of the signed documents and the messages you exchanged, and note the odometer readings on the day. If anything is disputed later, these records are what you will rely on.
