Swapping cars when the values are different
How cash top-ups work in a swap, how to ask for one politely, and how to keep it fair for both sides.

It is normal for the values to differ
It is rare for two cars to be worth exactly the same. Most swaps involve a little cash going one way. Treat the cash as part of the deal, not as an afterthought.
How to bring it up
- Be direct and friendly: "I'd do it if you add $2,000 to cover the difference in kilometres."
- Back your number with listings you found. Facts are easier to agree with than opinions.
- Offer a range if you are flexible. Saying "between $1,500 and $2,500" invites a conversation.
Use the cash fields in your ad
On WYG you can put cash on either side of your ad: "I have a car" and "I want a car plus cash", or "I have a car plus cash" and "I want a better car". You can enter a range, a minimum or a maximum, so people know what to expect before they message you.
Keep it safe
- Do not send money in advance for a car you have not seen.
- Prefer a bank transfer you can verify to handing over a large amount of cash in a car park.
- Write the amount on the receipt for both cars.
