How to value your car before a swap
A simple way to work out a fair value for your car so a swap, with or without cash on top, feels even for both sides.

Why value matters in a swap
A swap works when both people feel they got a fair deal. You do not need to agree on an exact dollar figure, but you do need a shared idea of whether the two cars are worth about the same. If they are not, the gap is what the cash top-up is for.
Look at what similar cars are really selling for
- Search for the same make, model, variant and year on the big sale sites, and note the asking prices.
- Narrow it to cars with similar kilometres and condition. A 40,000 km car and a 160,000 km car are not the same car.
- Asking prices are usually a little higher than what cars sell for, so allow for some negotiation.
- Look at 5 to 10 listings, not one. The middle of the range is your best guide.
Adjust for the things that move the price
- Kilometres: lower is better, and the effect is bigger on newer cars.
- Condition: dents, worn tyres, interior wear and mechanical issues all lower the value.
- Service history: a documented history is worth real money.
- Modifications: some add value to the right buyer, but many lower the pool of buyers. Be honest about which.
- Rego and roadworthy: a car with a long registration and a recent certificate is worth more than one that needs both.
Use your garage valuation on WYG
When you add a car on WYG you can set your own valuation. It is shown on the car's page, and as more cars are added, the site can show how your car compares with similar ones. Treat it as a rough guide, not an appraisal.
Settling the gap with cash
If one car is worth more, the person with the lower-value car adds cash to even it up. Agree the amount in writing before you meet, and record it on the receipt.
